Back To Basics – Step 1: Prep Skin

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a relaxing weekend 🙂 …to kick-off the week I decided to start a new series on the Pretty Politics blog called Back To Basics.

While there are many that are well versed on makeup application, there are some that are just starting out in makeup. I have been getting a lot of questions on application and products so I thought it would be fun to tackle makeup application from start to finish, step by step, together.

So our first step is to Prep the skin

Before applying makeup it’s important to take note of these necessary steps to ensure that the makeup applies evenly and lasts all day.

Start by cleansing your skin to remove all excess oil and dirt. Often beauty tips recommend hot water to wash your face and others cold….the truth is lukewarm water is best for daily cleansing. You could use hot or cold water as well but not too hot as it can dehydrate the skin. If you want to use an exfoliator you can, I generally go in with my Clinique face brush and my cleanser just to remove any dry, dead skin.

Once your skin is properly cleansed, you can go in with a mild toner (this is optional). The best toner to use before makeup is Micellar water. At this point we don’t want to treat the skin. So avoid using AHA or BHA toners, it’s not necessary.

Moisturiser is super important as it gives the makeup something to cling to. Be sure to moisturise well while paying careful attention to dry areas on the face.

Don’t forget to exfoliate the lips and add some lip balm. This will help give a smooth soft canvas for whatever lip products you choose to use.

Following all of these steps will create an excellent canvas for your makeup, and will ensure that your makeup is flawless and lasts all day.

I hope you enjoyed part one of the Back to Basics series. This series will run concurrently with the other posts of the week, so there will be atleast two post a week 🙂 If you haven’t already, please subscribe so you can be up to date with the latest posts. I will continue this series every Monday so be sure to check it out 😉 Thank you guys for all your support!

Have a great week 😉
